Potty Training : What do I need to get started?

I have always said it, and I know it sounds funny, but I look forward to this potty training time. It's a moment we have been building on from the first diaper I changed. I think it has to do with a passage from a more passive infant, who has the minimal ability to interact, even during those pauses and invitations that I give, to a highly interactive toddler who tells me, "Me do it! That toilet! Pee!" I also find myself full of joy as I sit on the floor of the bathroom in our rhythm of undressing-changing diapers-sitting on the toilet-washing hands-singing-telling stories. I find I spend quite a bit of my time in the bathroom now, whether it's at school while one of the children struggles with finding how each leg fits into each individual leg of their pants or reading the 5th book to my son as I hope his poop goes into the toilet today. I look forward to these moments and luxuriate in taking my time, building that trust and showing the children I interact

A Reflection on Outdoor Play

Lately I’ve been reflecting on all of the hard work that goes on during our time outside everyday. Our yard is a beautiful space with many opportunities for exploring and the children are involved in every aspect of it: caring for the garden , making art in the studio , and carefully observing the wildlife are just a few examples of how we spend our time outside together. While I was observing the children outside recently, it struck me that one common thread which ties many of our outdoor activities together is the play-based exploration of physics -- even beginning in infancy the children are constantly driven to explore concepts of nature, motion, force, and balance and it is this drive to understand the fundamentals of how the universe behaves that motivates much of our outdoor play. Diapers to Undies: How We Think About Potty Training

When children begin at the Preschool House, whether they are transitioning into care with us from the Infant House or are new to the Tumbleweed community, one of the first questions we often hear from parents is about potty training. When will it happen? What will it look like? What should parents be doing? The first thing we like to remind parents of when we discuss potty training is that we must let the child be the leader. There are few things in their lives over which preschoolers get control, but they do have absolute control over what goes into their bodies and what comes out (and where). So, rather than setting up a power struggle that we are sure to lose (as we can't force a child to pee or poop when we want them to), we want to follow each child, with as little pressure as possible, trusting that they know what is best for themselves - and knowing that it is physically more safe and healthy to do so.
